I've recently installed Ubuntu 20.04 on my laptop only to find the touchpad didn't work, it is recognized in xinput and is turned on in settings. Which drivers can I install to make it work?(HP Pavilion 15 Gaming, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050, AMD Ryzen 5)
Laptop Elantech Touchpad Not Working

I've been using Ubuntu since 08.04 but don't consider myself 'knowledgable' on the subject. I have noted however that I suffered the same issues with my new HP laptop when I replaced Windows10 with Ubuntu 20.04. No touchpad detected ergo just no touchpad! I recently decided to dual boot Win10 & Ubuntu but the problem persisted until today. I selected UEFI Firmware Setup from the Grub menu. This took me to Windows Boot Manager where I selected Ubuntu. This took me back to the GRUB menu where I selected Ubuntu. Hey Presto, fully functioning Touchpad with one and two finger scrolling etc. Hope this helps someone else with similar setup to gain functionality. My motive was simply to get back to Ubuntu as I tired of Windows very quickly and just wanted to come 'home'.
I have the same touchpad on an ASUS laptop. Linux kernels below 4.5 don't have the drivers for this touchpad, so all you have to do is upgrade your kernel. Even though Linux kernels go all the way to 4.10 as of this writing, I like to trail the edge of technology, so if you just go to 4.5, you should be good.
Youmight also want to check whether pressing a particular function key enables ordisables the touchpad. On many laptops, F6 is the key for this purpose. In someother laptops, Fn+F6 or Fn+F5 do the trick. Take a look at the laptop manual toknow which key or combination works in case of your laptop.
I have noticed that after setting things up correctly and Restarting Windows 10, and logging in as normal, the touchpad will operate correctly for a few seconds. I can move the pointer around and close Explorer windows that are open, for example. However, as system tray icons continue to load in and other programs start up e.g. Sticky Notes and so on... the touchpad breaks down and you can't see any pointer or get anything done. Something breaks it after it was working!
I have installed Windows 10 an hour ago and noticed that my touchpad wasn't working. Just rollback'd the ELAN pointing device driver and problem solved, lol. Didn't install anything. Hope this works for you
Hi,After installing Arch on my laptop (HP probook x360 G1), everything worked fine. My touchpad had some issues, but I think it was a hardware problem. But since one week, my touchpad stopped working. By unloading psmouse module (modprobe -r psmouse) and reloading it with proto=imps, the touchpad works back, but without multitouch or middle click. I thought that the configuration of my trackpad was wrong; so I wanted to quickly fixed that using KDE's system configuration. But I get "no touchpad found" in "Input devices" > "touchpad".
Confirming a fresh install of ubuntu 18.10 works yields a fully functional touchpad but updating (tested with current kernel 4.18.0-12-generic) renders the touchpad unusable.Issuing "sudo sh -c 'echo -n "elantech"> /sys/bus/serio/devices/serio1/protocol'" restores the trackpads functionality for the current session as already described.
I'm using a Thinkpad T480s and while my Elantech touchpad was mostly functional upon moving to 18.10 two-finger right-click and three-finger middle-click stopped working. `libinput list-devices` showed 'none' for a couple of features like 'Click methods.'
I am using linux-lts and libinput, yes. And I have the /etc/modprobe.d/elan.conf file with a line that says elantech_smbus=0 synaptics_intertouch=0This has not solved the issue with the mouse occasionally not working, and it has also not solved the issue of tap-to-click going away.
Most Acer laptops allow you to quickly switch the touchpad on or off through shortcuts combination or with a single key. So, it might be that while using the keyboard, you incidentally triggered the command to switch the touchpad off.
Among other causes reported by users whose touchpad stopped working, outdated, or incompatible device drivers are the most common. Driver-related issues can result from corrupt or missing system files or recent system updates.
Before proceeding with the installation steps of the new Windows Precision drivers, we would recommend keeping a spare USB mouse on standby, just in case the trackpad stops working for whatever reason. Before proceeding as well you should google your Laptop name and model number to see if other people have tried this technique before, and whether they were successful or not. This technique might not work for every laptop. 2ff7e9595c
